After Hours Administrator 3.0 is a utility that will Backup, then Compress & Reindex one or more ACT! databases at night (i.e. After Hours) when nobody needs access to them.  Version 3.0 has a many new features. “Why Should I Compress & Reindex?”

Performing regular Compress & Reindex (C&R) operations in ACT! is important for the health of your database. However, there are some common impediments to this important practice.

  • Compress & Reindex requires all users to log out of the database before the process can be performed. This means the data is not available until the C&R is complete. Very large databases can take a long time to C&R. Users who depend on ACT! may not be too pleased about being “locked out” when they need their data.
  • If you have more than one ACT! database, it is often difficult to remember which ones have been reindexed (if at all). You could start a C&R as you left for the day, but that would require you to leave ACT! running and this can get in the way of automated backups. In addition, you could only C&R one database at a time.

“I Meant to Back it Up”

Backups are another, often ignored necessity. Once again, to make a backup of the ACT! database, everyone needs to be out of the database, so there often is no time to maintain a regular backup schedule! It is true, most servers perform automated backups, but have you ever tried to get a recent backup from a busy IT department? Wouldn't it be nice to have a recent, easily accessible copy of your ACT! data you could “fall back on” if you need it?

AHA 3.0  is designed to run from your network server.  It will Backup, then Compress & Re-index your databases at a time when nobody needs access to them. It is necessary that ACT! be installed on the machine that is running AHA but it does not need to be running (in fact it shouldn't be running). AHA works with a custom service that will sit in the background, waiting for the specified time and day(s), at which point it will...
  • Open ACT!
  • Log out any network users who forgot to exit from ACT!,
  • Perform Backups of the specified databases,
  • Run Compress & Reindex for the same databases,
  • Close any open databases.
  • Report it's results as histories to specified users for each database (NEW!)
  • Report errors as Alarmed To-Do's in ACT! (NEW!)
  • Optionally send an E-mail to select users should any errors occur (NEW!)

AHA’s backup utility will create as separate backups for each database as you wish (the default setting is 20). If, for example, you have a database called Customers, the first backup is named Customers1.zip, the next is Customers2.zip and so on until you get to Customers20.zip. On the next backup, AHA replaces Customers1.zip. You can increase or reduce the number of increments if you wish. Backups are stored in a format that can be restored using ACT!’s built-in Restore command.

After Hours Administrator 3.0 is distributed with a limited life span and must be registered (via phone or email) within 30 days of installation for it to continue to operate.
